DIY Modern Murphy Bed || Making a Fold Down Bed
Today, I’m going to show you how to build a DIY modern Murphy bed. This project is perfect for creating a multi-functional space in your home, such as a home office that can also serve as a guest room. I partnered with Rockler to try out their DIY Murphy bed kit, which includes all the necessary hardware and plans. This is the biggest build I’ve tackled so far, and I am so excited to share it with you!

Planning and Preparation
Before diving into any DIY project, it’s essential to do some planning and preparation. Determine the space in your home where you want to install the Murphy bed and consider its purpose. In my case, I wanted to create a home office and guest room for my mom, who works from home as a physical therapist. After determining the space and purpose, I chose a Murphy bed kit from Rockler that would fit my needs.
Gathering Materials
To build this DIY Murphy bed, you will need materials such as plywood, pine, and other required components. The specific materials you’ll need may vary depending on the kit you choose. For my project, I needed four sheets of three-quarter inch plywood, two sheets of quarter-inch plywood, and a variety of pine pieces. It’s important to gather all the necessary materials before starting the project.
Cutting and Preparing the Bed Frame
Once you have your materials, it’s time to cut and prepare the bed frame. Start by breaking down the plywood into the pieces specified in the cut list from Rockler’s woodworking plans. You can use a track saw, circular saw with a straight edge guide, or a table saw to make the cuts. Label each piece as you go to keep everything organized. After preparing the plywood, cut the pine pieces for the bed frame using a miter saw or a table saw. Again, label each piece for easy identification during assembly.
Assembling the Bed Frame
Now that you have all the pieces, it’s time to assemble the bed frame. Before starting, ensure the frame is square to prevent any issues later on. Use clamps, pre-drill, and glue to join the frame pieces together securely. Take your time during this step to make sure everything fits properly. If needed, disassemble the frame and reassemble it in the designated space.

Adding Plywood and Edge Banding
With the bed frame assembled, it’s time to add the plywood panels and edge banding for a finished look. Measure and cut the plywood panels according to the plans. Attach the plywood to the frame using screws, nails, or adhesive, depending on your preference. To give the plywood edges a clean and polished look, apply edge banding. Rockler’s woodworking plans will provide guidance on where to place the edge banding for a seamless finish.
Sanding and Finishing
Once the bed frame and panels are in place, it’s time to sand and finish the project. Start by sanding all the surfaces with sandpaper, gradually progressing from rough grit to fine grit. This will create a smooth and even finish. After sanding, apply a primer or sealer to protect the wood. Then, apply your choice of paint or stain to achieve the desired look. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for drying times and number of coats.

Staining and Installing the Doors
As the main structure of the Murphy bed comes together, it’s time to focus on the doors. Choose a stain color that complements the overall aesthetic of the room. Prepare the doors for staining by sanding them to remove any imperfections. Apply the stain according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and finish with a protective coat. Once the doors are ready, attach them to the bed frame, ensuring they are properly aligned and functioning smoothly.
Installing Hardware and Cabinet Pieces
To complete the Murphy bed, it’s essential to install the necessary hardware and cabinet pieces. Attach hinges and lift mechanisms to allow the bed to fold up and down easily. These mechanisms are key to the functionality of the Murphy bed. Additionally, install any cabinet pieces and shelves that are part of your design plan. Take your time during this step to ensure everything is securely in place.

Adding Custom Door Handles
To add a personal touch to your Murphy bed, consider adding custom door handles. These can be as simple or as elaborate as you like, depending on your style preferences. Choose handles that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Make sure to install them securely to withstand regular use.
Adjustments and Final Touches
After completing the main construction of the Murphy bed, it’s time to make any necessary adjustments and add final touches. Double-check that the bed folds up and down properly, making any necessary adjustments to the hardware or frame. Additionally, consider adding trim and a bottom trim piece to give the bed a polished look. Take the time to ensure everything is perfect before moving on to the final step.

Conclusion
Building a DIY modern Murphy bed is a rewarding project that can transform a space in your home into a multi-functional area. By following the steps outlined in this article, you can successfully create a fold-down bed that is both stylish and functional. From planning and preparation to the final touches, every step is crucial in ensuring a successful outcome. I am thrilled with the final result of my own Murphy bed project, and I can’t wait to move on to transforming the rest of the space into my mom’s dream home office.
