The video provides a full list of materials and tools needed, as well as links for the kit and instructions. The host covers everything from preparing the space to assembling the bed, sharing tips and techniques along the way. By the end of the video, you’ll feel inspired to create extra space in your own home with this functional and stylish Murphy bed.

Hey guys, we just finished putting in this Murphy bed and I am so happy with the way it came out. I feel like our house gained an entire extra room. We used a kit that provides all the hardware to safely open and close the bed, but you’ll need to get the plywood and cut it yourself. The video takes you from start to finish, including removing a section of a built-in shelf and assembling the bed with detailed instructions. With people spending more time at home, this is a great way to create the extra space you’re looking for, whether it’s a home office or just additional room.

Preparing the Space

Removing built-in shelf

To begin building your Murphy Bed, you’ll first need to prepare the space where it will be installed. This may involve removing any obstacles or obstructions that might interfere with the bed cabinet. In our case, we had to remove a section of a built-in shelf that was just low enough to cause interference. This was a signature touch of the home builder, but unfortunately, it wasn’t compatible with the bed cabinet.

Cutting mattress support slats

Next, you’ll need to cut the mattress support slats to the appropriate length. We used pine one by twos for this purpose. The slats were cut to size, and then the lengths were paired together in an L-shaped configuration using glue and brad nails. If you don’t have access to a powered nailer, a hammer and regular brad nails will work just as well. It’s important to ensure that the slats are securely fastened to provide adequate support for the mattress.

Working with Plywood

Rough cutting plywood pieces

When working with plywood, especially thick plywood, cutting can present a bit of a challenge. It’s recommended to rough cut the pieces into more manageable sizes before sending them through to their final width. If you have a table saw, this is the ideal tool for the job. However, if a table saw isn’t available, a circular saw adapter like the rip cut or accu cut from craig can be used. At the very least, you’ll need a way to make accurate straight cuts. In a pinch, you can use a straight edge as a guide.

Making straight cuts

When making cuts in plywood, it’s important to ensure that they are straight and clean. This will result in better-fitting pieces and a more professional-looking end result. Using a table saw or circular saw with a straight edge as a guide can help achieve straight cuts. Take your time and make sure to measure and mark the plywood accurately before cutting.

Using pilot holes to avoid splitting

Plywood and other similar materials can be prone to splitting, especially when screws are being used. To avoid this, it’s best to use pilot holes before driving in screws. Pilot holes are small holes that are drilled before the screws are inserted. They provide a guide for the screws and help prevent the wood from splitting. Additionally, using countersink bits can ensure that the heads of the screws sit flush with the surface of the plywood.

Using a sacrificial piece of scrap wood

When drilling through plywood, it’s a good idea to use a sacrificial piece of scrap wood underneath the working piece. This helps prevent chipping or blowouts when the drill bit goes through the plywood. The scrap wood acts as a backing and provides support, reducing the likelihood of any damage occurring. This is a simple but effective technique to ensure clean and smooth holes when drilling through plywood.

Positioning the Hardware

Importance of positioning hardware correctly

Proper positioning of the hardware is crucial for the stability and functionality of the Murphy Bed. It’s important to carefully follow the instruction manual and ensure that each piece of hardware is installed in the correct location. This will ensure that the bed operates smoothly and that all components are securely attached.

Difficulties faced in positioning hardware

Positioning the hardware correctly may present some challenges, particularly when dealing with multiple components and intricate mechanisms. It’s important to take your time and follow the instructions carefully. This may require some patience and precision, but the end result will be worth the effort.

Using a drill bit as a spacer

In some instances, the instruction manual may call for a specific gap between certain components. To achieve this gap accurately, you can use a drill bit as a spacer. For example, if the instructions call for a 5/16 inch gap between a ball stud and a side rail, you can place a 5/16 inch drill bit between them as you position and attach them. This ensures the desired gap is achieved and helps maintain the proper functionality of the bed.

Following instructions for hardware placement

To ensure the bed operates smoothly and securely, it’s important to carefully follow the instructions for hardware placement. The instruction manual will provide clear illustrations and step-by-step guidance on how to position each piece of hardware. Take your time and double-check your work to ensure everything is in its proper place before moving on to the next step.

Covering Plywood Edges

Building a Murphy Bed with Create-a-Bed

Using edge banding to cover edges

Plywood edges can look unsightly if left exposed, detracting from the overall appearance of the Murphy Bed. To achieve a professional and finished look, it’s recommended to use edge banding. Edge banding is a thin wood veneer with a heat-activated adhesive on the back. It can be easily applied to the edges of the plywood to cover them.

Application of edge banding

Applying edge banding is a relatively straightforward process. Simply iron the edge banding onto the plywood edges, ensuring that it adheres properly. Apply even pressure and run the iron along the edge banding to activate the adhesive. This will bond the edge banding to the plywood.

Cutting or sanding excess edge banding

After applying the edge banding, there may be excess material that needs to be removed. This can be done by either cutting or sanding the excess edge banding. Carefully trim the excess with a utility knife or use sandpaper to sand it down flush with the plywood surface. Take your time and be meticulous to achieve a clean and seamless finished edge.

Importance of covering exposed edges

Covering exposed edges with edge banding is essential for a professional and polished look. Exposed edges can be unsightly and can also be prone to damage or splintering. By covering them with edge banding, you not only enhance the appearance of the Murphy Bed but also protect the edges and ensure a longer lifespan for the furniture.

Painting the Pieces

Applying a basic white coat of paint

Once all the hardware is in place and the plywood edges are covered, it’s time to move on to painting the pieces. Applying a coat of paint will not only improve the aesthetic appeal of the Murphy Bed but also provide an additional layer of protection to the wood. We chose to apply a basic white coat of paint, but you can customize the color to fit your desired aesthetic.

Preparing the pieces for assembly

Before painting, make sure to properly prepare the pieces for assembly. This may involve sanding any rough edges or imperfections and ensuring that the surfaces are clean and free of dust or debris. Proper preparation will result in a smoother and more professional-looking finish.

Aesthetic improvement with paint

Painting the pieces can significantly enhance the overall appearance of the Murphy Bed. It can transform the raw materials into a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing piece of furniture. Choose a paint color that complements your existing decor or personal style, and have fun with the process of bringing your Murphy Bed to life.

Final touch before assembly

Applying the paint is the final touch before moving on to the assembly of the Murphy Bed. Take your time and ensure that each piece is evenly coated. Allow the paint to dry completely before proceeding with the assembly process. This will prevent any smudging or damage to the freshly painted surfaces.

Assembly

Deviation from instructions for headboard

While it’s important to follow the instructions provided, sometimes personal preferences or unique circumstances may require a slight deviation from the recommended steps. In our case, we decided to use pocket holes to join the headboard to the side walls instead of drilling through the side and into the headboard. This deviation allowed for a stronger attachment and better stability.

Using pocket holes for stronger attachment

Pocket holes are a popular joinery technique that provides a strong and hidden connection between two pieces of wood. By using a pocket hole jig, you can create precision-drilled holes at an angle, allowing screws to be inserted and secured discreetly. This method offers enhanced strength and stability, making it an ideal choice for attaching the headboard to the side walls of the Murphy Bed.

Temporary pull-down using a nylon strap

Sometimes, certain components or accessories may not be available or arrive in time for the assembly process. In our case, the pull bar for the Murphy Bed hadn’t arrived yet, so we had to improvise a temporary solution. We used a nylon strap as a makeshift pull-down mechanism. This allowed us to test the bed’s functionality and ensure that everything was working smoothly until the proper pull bar arrived.

Handling the gas springs

Gas springs are an integral part of the Murphy Bed mechanism as they assist in smoothly opening and closing the bed. When positioning the gas springs, it’s important to exercise caution and follow the instructions carefully. The gas springs can be quite powerful and may cause the bed to snap back up if not properly handled. Make sure to keep weight on the bed or have someone hold it down while placing the mattress to prevent any accidents or injuries.

Covering Built-In Shelves

Creating box wraps with thin plywood

If you have built-in shelves that are obstructing the area where the Murphy Bed is installed, there are different approaches to dealing with them. In our case, we decided to create box wraps using thin plywood. These box wraps slip over the shelves, covering up any cut edges and providing a clean and finished look.

Slipping the wraps over the shelves

Once the box wraps are created, they can be easily slipped over the built-in shelves. This process ensures that the shelves are concealed and no longer visible, creating a seamless transition between the Murphy Bed and the surrounding space. The box wraps also help maintain the overall aesthetic of the room and make the Murphy Bed installation appear more integrated into the existing environment.

Alternative method of removing shelves

If you prefer not to cover the built-in shelves, you have the option of removing them altogether. However, this may require additional work, such as patching up any resulting holes or gaps in the drywall. It’s important to consider the potential challenges and the level of expertise required for properly removing built-in shelves. This method may be more suitable for individuals with experience in drywall work or those willing to hire a professional to complete the task.

Consideration for future changes

When deciding whether to cover or remove built-in shelves, it’s important to consider any potential future changes or modifications that might be desired. If there is a possibility that the shelves will be needed again or if you may want to revert the space back to its original configuration, covering the shelves may be a more viable option. This allows for greater flexibility and ease of restoration in the future.

Installing the Pull Handle

Disassembling to install the pull handle

To install the pull handle for the Murphy Bed, some disassembly may be required. Follow the instructions provided and carefully disassemble any necessary components to access the area where the pull handle will be installed. Take your time and ensure that all connections are secure, as the pull handle plays a crucial role in the operation and functionality of the bed.

Keeping weight on the bed during installation

When installing the pull handle, it’s important to keep weight on the bed to prevent any accidents or injuries. The gas springs in the Murphy Bed are designed to assist in keeping the bed open, but they can be quite powerful and may cause the bed to snap back up if weight is not applied. If necessary, have someone help hold the bed down while you install the pull handle to ensure the safety of yourself and others.

Completion of the installation

Once the pull handle is securely installed, take a moment to step back and admire your finished Murphy Bed. The installation process is now complete, and the bed is ready to be used. Test the functionality, make any necessary adjustments, and ensure that everything is working as intended before moving on to the final adjustments and finishing touches.

Final adjustments and finishing touches

After completing the installation of the Murphy Bed and ensuring its functionality, take the time to make any final adjustments or perform any necessary finishing touches. This may include tightening screws, leveling the bed, or addressing any minor imperfections. Pay attention to details and ensure that the bed is in perfect condition and ready to be used.

Room Decoration

The room is ready to decorate

With the Murphy Bed installed and the space transformed, the room is now ready to be decorated. Take this opportunity to personalize the space and make it your own. Consider your style preferences, existing decor, and the overall function of the room. Use this newly created space to showcase your creativity and create a welcoming environment for yourself and your guests.

Utilizing the extra space created

One of the main benefits of installing a Murphy Bed is the creation of additional space. Whether it’s in a guest room, home office, or multipurpose room, the extra space can be utilized in various ways. Consider the specific needs and requirements of your household and explore different possibilities for utilizing this newfound space.

Possibilities for home office or additional space

A Murphy Bed installation opens up the opportunity to have a home office, a dedicated workspace, or simply a functional area for various activities. The flexibility it provides allows you to easily transform the room based on your needs. You can now have a separate space to work, create, relax, or engage in hobbies and activities without sacrificing the comfort and functionality of a traditional bed.

Benefits of having more space at home

Having more space at home offers numerous benefits. It enhances the overall functionality and comfort of your living environment.
